The Winter Blues
“The Winter Blues” is a reality for many people living through the cold gray winters of Michigan. As a psychiatric therapy provider in the Downriver Michigan area, I know how often people struggle during these cold and gloomy months with Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD. The most common symptoms of SAD are low mood and low motivation. If you notice yourself less motivated and feeling down during the winter, then you might have SAD.
It’s important to talk to your doctor if you notice any changes in sleep, appetite, weight, general mood, and motivation. Your primary care provider will be able to support you in finding a solution to these changes. Your primary care provider can also refer you to a psychiatric therapy provider who specializes in SAD treatment.
Medication treatment with an antidepressant and light therapy are first line treatments for SAD and can make the winter months much more pleasant (although not warmer!!!). If you feel like you are experiencing symptoms of SAD, call PPOM to make an appointment. Our team of medical experts will work together to ensure your mental health improves.
